Free Refrigeration Upgrades for Los Angeles Grocery and Corner Stores
The now-completed Healthy Stores Refrigeration Program (HSRP) helped small businesses in Los Angeles food deserts (and communities disproportionately affected by pollution) replace existing, inefficient refrigerators with new efficient models to fill with California-grown healthy food.
Along with assisting business owners find the right new fridge and identify healthy food options (such as stock California-grown fruits, vegetables, nuts, and minimally processed foods), the program handled the recycling process if replacing an old unit and installed the new refrigerator(s), all at no cost. Program representatives also provided free education and training on successfully sourcing, marketing, and selling healthy foods.
Research also shows that stores selling healthy food options can increase overall sales! This free program helped participating small business owners save money on their energy bills, benefit from newer equipment, and improve the health of their neighborhoods.
