Free Refrigeration Upgrades for Los Angeles Grocery and Corner Stores

The Healthy Stores Refrigeration Program (HSRP) helps small businesses in Los Angeles’ food deserts replace existing, inefficient refrigerators with new efficient models to fill with California-grown healthy food. We’ll help you find the right new fridge, walk you through the recycling process if you are replacing an old unit, install your refrigerator, and identify healthy food options, all at no cost.

Program representatives will also provide free education and training on successfully sourcing, marketing, and selling healthy foods. If you own either an independent grocery or a corner store, you may be eligible. Contact us to learn more and claim your free upgraded fridge!

Is my business eligible?

If you own a grocery or corner store, you may be eligible! We are focused on businesses in food deserts and communities disproportionately affected by pollution. We can help you confirm that your business meets these criteria.

What do I need to do?

You’ll work with a representative to upgrade your fridge and stock California-grown fruits, vegetables, nuts, and minimally processed foods in your replacement fridge. You’ll also participate in a free healthy foods training session and complete a survey before and after refrigeration installation.

Why should I participate in this program?

This is a free program that will help you save money on your energy bill, benefit from improved equipment, and improve the health of your neighborhood. Research also shows that stores selling healthy food options can increase overall sales!

How do I get started?

Email us at HSRP@isd.lacounty.gov to connect with a program representative. Then, we’ll help you complete an interest form and choose your new fridge.
